Precautions for Using Self Tapping Screws

2024-08-16

Self tapping screws, as a special type of "self tapping" fastener, have a unique design that combines two different directions of threads, starting from the bottom and the top. This feature makes them particularly suitable for connecting thin metal plates because they can penetrate directly and lock firmly without drilling in advance. However, it is important to realize that excessive use or improper operation may wear or even damage their thread structure.

When using self tapping screws, pay special attention to the following points:

1. Size matching: The first priority is to ensure that the size of the selected self tapping screws is accurately matched to the material to be connected. The ideal screw size should ensure that at least half of the thread length is embedded in the material, and at least 1 mm of margin is added to ensure a stable connection.

2. Positioning accuracy: Before installation, ensure that the insertion position of the self tapping screw is accurate and perpendicular to the fixed board surface. This is the key to ensure successful and stable installation. When making the hole, it is best to choose an area where there is no thread interference for positioning to ensure smooth operation.

3. Matching of thread and drilling angle: Depending on the different thread types of self tapping screws, the cutting angle will vary. Therefore, during the installation process, the drilling angle must be carefully adjusted to match the cutting angle of the thread to ensure that the thread can smoothly cut into the plate to avoid jamming or damage.

4. Force control: Even if the appropriate self tapping screws are selected and positioned correctly, the force during operation is also an element that cannot be ignored. Excessive force may cause the thread to be over-tightened, which not only affects the installation effect, but may also cause damage to the self tapping screw itself, such as failure to rotate smoothly. Therefore, the force should be moderate and even to avoid excessive force.
