Self-tapping screws drill their own holes when screwed into wood, plastic, metal, and other materials. By using a screwdriver to attach self-tapping screws, you can create precisely matching threads. They are ideal for combining two different types of materials, or for screwing into areas that can only be accessed from one side. For products that require regular maintenance, such as air conditioners or eaves, it is helpful to use self-tapping screws, as you will need to follow the same threads to disassemble and reassemble the item.

The two types of self-tapping screws are thread forming and thread cutting. Thread-forming screws are used in plastics, causing the material to deform as the screw enters. While thread forming screws retain the material more tightly, there is a risk of over-tightening the screws, which can cause the material to crack under pressure. Thread-cutting screws, on the other hand, are commonly used in wood and metal to literally remove some material and create a thread path for the screw. The disadvantage of thread-cutting screws is that the threads may strip when the fastener is removed. If this happens, make sure to use slightly larger self-tapping screws when reassembling the product.
